Jane Murray has taught in primary schools, high schools and at two universities. After retiring, she was persuaded to register at the University of Pretoria’s Continuing Education Department for a six-month editing course, superbly presented by Dr Idette Noomé of the Department of English, who set more homework than Jane had ever had in her life. More recently, Jane has taught in the Language Proficiency Department at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (former Medunsa). She played in the XYZ team of Kruinsig Dames Netball Club until her early sixties and is now an enthusiastic Park Run walker at the Botanical Gardens in Pretoria. On each of her first three walks she was first in her age group – to her own surprise – and dared anyone to suggest that she was probably the only one in that group.
Mary Hazelton, chair of PEG from 2000 to 2004, has been an academic editor, a language teacher, and a dance notator. She has been pernickety about grammar since she was a child. In her O-level English language paper there was a question about ‘who’ and ‘whom’, which she remembers having to explain to one of her teachers afterwards. So although she is now retired, Mary is only happy to share her knowledge of grammar.
