We encourage all established copy-editors to become members and contribute towards the achievement of PEG's aims. By sharing their professional experience and expertise with colleagues, our members contribute to:
elevating and upholding standards of work in the profession
improving the public perception of copy-editing as a craft
raising the awareness of a much-needed service.
Our objectives are:
to promote high standards of copy-editing and proofreading
to uphold the professional status of copy-editors and promote professional behaviour among members
to promote contact among members, the exchange of ideas and the dissemination of information on matters of professional interest
to promote an understanding of the work of copy-editors among potential clients and the general public
to establish and maintain liaison with other societies of copy-editors worldwide.
Some of the benefits of membership of PEG:
Regular email communication informing members of future meetings and activities as well as job opportunities.
Electronic discussion group, a useful resource for requesting advice, discussing problems and sharing information.
A quarterly publication, PEGboard, which carries reports of PEG meetings and covers news, general trends and events relating to editing and publishing in South Africa and elsewhere.
Entry in the annual Directory of Members’ Services, circulated nationwide to publishers and likely employers of freelance workers.
Moreover, although as yet PEG has no formal accreditation system in place, the fact that you are a PEG member and therefore belong to the network of copy-editors confirms your status to potential clients as someone who is in touch with others in the profession and not working out on a limb.
"An editor should tell the author his writing is better than it is. Not a lot better, a little better." (TS Elliot)
