At present, PEG also offers members the opportunity to acquire accreditation through the South African Translators’ Institute (SATI). This involves taking an editing examination drawn up by SATI for its language practitioners and administered by PEG.
Such accreditation has no legal or academic standing, but does prove a candidate's practical competence and therefore offers clients an assurance that the member in question is able to do the job.
During 2009/2010, PEG will be launching its own continuing professional development (CPD) programme.
Under this programme, members will be able to earn points for undergoing training, attending workshops and certain meetings and seminars, subjecting themselves to testing, and obtaining references from regular clients. The more points they earn, the higher their status (there will be a number of graded levels).
The major benefit will be that practitioners will be able to indicate this on their stationery and in their marketing materials, so that clients and potential clients will be made aware of their professional status and confident that they are using someone who is really serious about their craft.
