PEG holds a range of events during the year, at two-monthly intervals,
to create networking opportunities for its members as
well as to keep them informed and abreast of trends. Guest speakers are an
important component of our annual programme, as are training sessions.
We welcome questions and suggestions about events, which can be
directed to Isabelle Delvare at idelvare@yahoo.co.uk (Gauteng)
or Marlene Rose at marlenerose@adept.co.za (Cape Town).
If you answered ‘no’ to the question above, don’t worry—you’re not alone! Many of us who have jobs that require us to sit at our computers most of the day are guilty of ‘computer bad posture’ and suffer from chronic neck and back pain as a result.
The Gauteng PEG Committee will be hosting a talk and demonstration, by physiotherapist Maria Botma, on computer ergonomics. Specifically, she will deal with:
· which postures to avoid when sitting at your computer · what is the correct posture to adopt when sitting at your computer and why · various exercises that you can do to relieve tension in your neck, back and hands · different equipment, such as cushions, that you can use to assist you in attaining the correct computer posture.
Cost: R50 for PEG members and R60 for non-PEG members
In association with the Cape Town Book Fair's Professional Programme on the newly instituted Trade Only day (Friday, 30 July), PEG will be presenting a one-day workshop entitled A handle on Plain Language issues and practice. Speakers will be Hector Tshabalala, Editor-in-Chief, Language Services at our National Parliament; Eleanor Cornelius, Lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Johannesburg, and John Linnegar, PEG chairperson and well-known facilitator of publishing-related training courses.
To be able to meet its member' expectations and for marketing purposes, PEG will be running a series of short surveys during 2010 to profile its membership and identify their specific needs.
Over 40 PEG members attended the May meeting at which Arthur Attwell, co-founder and CEO of Electric Book Works, gave a talk about e-books and what they mean for editors. After a well-prepared and dynamic talk, a lively discussion ensued. The general consensus was that it had been the best meeting of the year.
PEG's Fiction conference declared a success The two days of presentations by writers, editors, publishers and artists on aspects of writing and editing works of fiction and narrative non-fiction was a feast for the more than 70 delegates, who have overwhelmingly declared it a great experience and indicated a need for similar events in the future.
