Membership categories

Student Member: Must be a student on a recognised publishing, editing or language practitioner course. The fee is lower and the student may not be included in the Directory of Members’ Services.

Associate: Applicants who are new to the profession are admitted to PEG as associates. At present associates may take an entry in the Directory of Members’ Services provided their status and skills are clearly stated. This category also applies to individuals from related professions who do not practise as editors but join PEG out of professional interest.

Member: A trained or practising editor. All those who joined PEG prior to 2008 are members. The term is also used to describe anyone who has joined since that date who has demonstrated knowledge of the profession through (a) possession of a degree with some editing content, (b) proof of working in the field, or (c) successful completion of a short training course and a PEG mentorship. A new applicant who submits proof of one of these three criteria will be accepted as a member.

As at late 2009, only the categories on the left are in operation. It is planned to introduce the categories of accredited member and advanced member during 2010.

Accredited Member: This term will be used to describe any member who EITHER passes the editing/ proofreading test to be introduced in 2010 OR achieves accreditation through a points system which is being developed OR provides proof of professional competence in the form of references and hours worked.

Advanced Member: This category will be used to accommodate long-standing and experienced editors. Applicants must be an accredited member plus have been practising as an editor for at least five years prior to the date of application (with additional points requirements still to be determined).
